Boost labor productivity in the warehouse for a relatively low investment. |
Picking is generally the most labor-intensive component of a warehouse operation. Optimizing the pick slots is a proven way to reduce picking labor. This is accomplished by locating the fastest movers in the golden zone, minimizing picker travel time, and grouping the pick slots of items that are frequently picked together. Too many distribution centers have not correctly sized the individual pick locations. When pick slots are too small for the current velocity, the result is excessive putaway labor and stock-outs. When pick slots are too large, picker productivity is negatively impacted due to increased travel time. A properly slotted warehouse can also significantly improve ergonomics and reduce injuries by concentrating activity in the golden zone. The Progress Group has helped companies optimize warehouse slotting by setting up a sustainable slotting strategy. For some companies, slotting software has a rapid payback. We are experienced in assessing the existing slotting plan, and then recommending and implementing the appropriate level of technology.
